The SSTV (Sea Scout Training Vessel) Benjamin Chase is a 22ft Catalina sailboat. From 2012-2014 she was the Ship 100 Flagship. She is docked at Fort Washington Marina, just south of downtown Washington D.C.
She was donated to Ship 100 by Mr. Edwin Miller in 2012. We had just begun to consider a name when word came back that two Cub Scouts, specifically Tiger Cubs, had been lost in the Sandy Hook shooting in New Town, Connecticut on December 14, 2012. We wrote to the Connecticut Yankee Council to request permission to name our boat in memory of those two Cub Scouts. On August 17, 2013, she was christened in front of a crowd of over 100 people from around the nation, representing over a dozen units from Sea Scouts, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturing and the American Heritage Girls.
Ship 100 extends special thanks to Boy Scout Troop 581 and Cub Scout Pack 91 for their logistical support to this event.
As we sail, we remember Benjamin Wheeler and Chase Kowalski. May we keep ourselves physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight – that we may be the Scouts they should have become.Read More
